How Are You Doing Today?

Not only does this question alone get asked and answered millions of times each day, but you most probably answer it yourself more than once every day!

There’s nothing wrong with that, of course. This question is just the colloquial way friends greet each other everywhere.

But when asked this question, which answer do you give?

In other words, how do you usually describe how you are doing?

Does it range from neutral to pessimistic, such as:

  • Not bad.
  • So-so, I guess.
  • So far, so good.
  • Not bad under the circumstances.
  • Terrible!

Or does it sound more positive and optimistic, like:

  • Pretty good.
  • Fantastic!

For longer than he can remember, the great Zig Ziglar has been answering the “How are you?” question with something like, “Why, I’m doing better than good!”

Mr. Ziglar explains it this way:

I answer that way because I truly expect things to be and become ”better than good.” I have learned through the years that, for reasons I can’t scientifically or even theologically explain, how I expect things to be greatly influences how they become.

Because “better than good” is such an optimistic approach to life, I guarantee that you will be remembered when you say that’s how you’re doing. And it will catch on! Nothing is as infectious as optimism and a positive outlook. For instance, I attend a church with twenty-five thousand members in Dallas where I teach a large Sunday school class. Because I’ve been replying, “I’m doing better than good” for so many years, many of the members of my class, as well as the church staff, have adopted it as their own reply to “How are you?” And I can see the twinkle in their eye when they say it, because I know they mean it.

The power of words should never be underestimated. When you say, “I’m doing better than good,” that’s a first person, present tense, positive affirmation of who you are and where you are. Just saying you are doing “better than good” won’t make it so. But when you understand what it takes to live the “better than good” life and apply yourself, your life will truly be better than good.

The profound lesson here is that not only does what you think substantially impact who you are, but what you think about yourself, the world, and others – everything! – has a major impact on the kind of person you will become.

So, dear friend, how are you doing today?
