It can be difficult to do anything with your normal passion and excitement if you are feeling anxious. Anxiety can squelch your motivation and control your life – if you let it.
If you have experienced an anxiety attack, you may be fearful of having another one; but living in such fear means you are living in a state of perpetual anxiety. This can happen just because you are afraid of the anxiety itself!
Those who have never experienced an anxiety attack or high levels of anxiety cannot understand how hard this cycle can be to break.
If you believe you have to live in a constant state of fear and anxiety, you’re wrong. You really can learn how to deal with the anxiety in a more positive, self-helping manner.
Letting Go of Anxiety
Worrying about the next anxiety attack can cause you to be in a constant state of fear that may keep you from doing the things you love and enjoy. Anxiety can be crippling, but that doesn’t mean that it has to be.
It can be hard to stop the cycle once you develop the pattern of having anxiety-related feelings and anxiety attacks, but it isn’t impossible. You can overcome the anxiety cycle by using tools that are easy and convenient, and you may be able to overcome the cycle in less time than you thought possible.
Using Positive Affirmations to Overcome Anxiety
One way you can conquer anxiety is by using positive affirmations. By positive affirmations, I especially refer to rational coping self-statements that are a simple way to change your thought processes so you can take control of your anxiety before it controls you.
Many people create their own affirmations while other use affirmations from websites or books. It doesn’t matter where you find the affirmations, just as long as they are realistic and self-helping and you begin using them effectively throughout your day.
Choose affirmations that speak to you and help you overcome your fear of anxiety. Effective affirmations are usually designed to focus on the present and be about you, not anyone else.
Examples of Affirmations to Defeat Anxiety
Anxiety affirmations are simply positive, self-helping statements that you can say to yourself in those moments when you start to feel anxious. You can use these at any time and for any reason to calm your nerves and bring peace of mind.
For example, you can tell yourself:
- “Practically nothing lasts forever, even severe anxiety and panic. Providing I do not horrify myself about them, this too shall pass.”
- “I am not sure that I will achieve this project outstandingly. But I am pretty sure that if I use my creativity to keep trying, and ask for no guarantees, I will enjoy my efforts.”
- “If I have faith in my own ability to control and change my anxiety, I will do the work required to change it. I will give up my unrealistic and grandiose demands, changing them to preferences, and I thus most likely will reduce or eliminate my anxiety.”
Note: These rational maxims are excerpted from the bestselling book, How to Control Your Anxiety Before It Controls You, by Dr. Albert Ellis.
Any statement that replaces the anxiety-creating thoughts with a calm feeling will work – as long as you don’t make use of unrealistic positive thinking that may work temporarily to quell your anxiety, but not for long.
Say these positive, self-helping affirmations during anxious moments as often as you need to and continue affirming the rational thoughts until the anxious moment has passed and you calm down.
By using these affirmations when you are feeling anxious, you are literally reprogramming your mind. In doing so, you will be able to think in a more positive, self-helping manner. You can also use these affirmations to refocus your mind away from your anxiety and fear.
Every time you use an affirmation, you leave less and less room for the irrational fears and the anxiety that have ruled your life for far too long.

Nice advice Chantal. I used to use a system similar to what you discuss here to encourage myself daily. I wrote different positive affirmations on about 30 index cards. I then posted each index card on my wall, spread throughout my room. Each day when I woke up and went to sleep, I saw those words. Ultimately, they encouraged me and helped me overcome my fears and doubts. Unconventional, yes…but effective. Sometimes we have to think outside the box and do what works to encourage ourselves and ease our fears and anxieties. Thanks for this post!

David Newby: So happy you got value from this article! And no worries about your system being unconventional; both Louise L. Hay and Jack Canfield are using a similar system when it comes to affirming their life’s goals and dreams!
